BLK + BRWN. is taking submissions for horror/sci-fi short stories for our first anthology set in Kansas City and the surrounding areas.
Are you a local writer or aspiring writer aged 16 and up? Do you have a spine-chilling story to tell? We are excited to announce a call for submissions for our upcoming anthology, which we will publish and release for the community.
Our theme:
The Unseen: A Collection of short horror and sci-fi stories in Kansas City
Submission Guidelines:
- Must feature Black, Brown, and/or Indigenous voices (In true spirit of the mission of our bookstore, we kindly request that Black, Brown, and/or indigenous voices are not auxiliary to the story but are main focal points in submitted stories)
- Must take place in Kansas City and/or surrounding areas
- Stories must be between 5000-7000 words, at least 12 pt font, and 1.25-1.5 spaced.
- Submissions must be in a Word document format (.doc or .docx)
Deadline: UPDATED: Midnight on September 30th
Selection Criteria:
We are looking for stories that showcase originality, creativity, adherence to the theme, and quality of writing. Selected authors will receive a free copy of the chapbook and author credit in the anthology. Authors retain all rights to their stories.
Please note: we are not looking for slave trauma, or any racially motivated glorification of violence (i.e., we will not accept any trauma porn, slave narratives on making a mockery of Black experiences).
For any questions, please contact us at blkbrwnkc@gmail.com.
Happy writing!
