Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and the Harlem Renaissance

  • BLK + BRWN. 104 1/2 West 39th Street Kansas City, MO, 64111 United States (map)

What is Sankofa Society? It’s basically like a very cool study group. Each month the Sankofa Society, will meet to discuss the rich tapestry of Black literature, offering a comprehensive exploration of the works of prominent authors. BLK + BRWN. is both bookstore and community safe space so it only made sense for us to create an offering that could be lit-centered and community-driven, and what better way than a cool + casual study group with folks you actually look forward to seeing?

We’ll delve into the life, literary style, and thematic contributions of different Black authors, that dissect topics such as race, identity, feminism, activism, and more.

Sessions will be a combination of lecture, group discussion, and interactive activities. Materials for each session will be provided in advance for participants to read and prepare for discussions. Guest speakers, if available, will be invited to provide additional insights. Fee: $10/person

full transparency means we want to be very forthcoming with our friends + supporters. some of programming will now carry a small fee as a way to offset our out-of-pocket expenses— running programs can be kind of expensive and we don’t have any secret investors yet footing the bills; compensate authors + creatives for sharing their time with the store through our programming; and a small portion will be banked in our expansion fund to get a bigger space it’s time we start thinking bigger. ;)

Space is limited, so please make sure you’ve received confirmation on your spot.
